Ferris Martinez is a painter who creates massive oil paintings in his garage studio located in the sleepy Outer Richmond district of San Francisco, CA. He works primarily in traditional media such as oil paint, pastels, graphite, and charcoal. While his work is largely representational and heavily influenced by a love of Renaissance and Baroque art, the subject matter is far from traditional. Many of his paintings express a glaringly visceral self-exploratory narrative and investigate the nature of decay, the imagery of which is not for squeamish or faint of heart. This is no doubt also an offshoot of many years pouring over Marvel comics and graphic novels. Indeed, one can readily see the comic book influences in his sketchbook which is overflowing with complex robot arms and tentacled creatures reminiscent of John Carpenters The Thing. Ferris is also quite an accomplished singer and guitar player and we certainly look forward to hearing some songs around the campfire during this spring's Art Camp session!
