Alyssa Lempesis: Gulp April 30 – May 14, 2016 Opening Reception: April 30, 7-10pm I had the pleasure of meeting Alyssa Lempesis in 2012 during our undergraduate time at UC Berkeley. Alyssa was in the year ahead of me and I saw her graduate and go off to UC Davis for her MFA. If you are a regular Venison reader. You might recognize Alyssa's work. We featured her right after she completed her MFA, in our Autumn 2014 issue, here. |
I visited Alyssa as she was wrapping up her 3 month time as resident artist at Alter space. We spoke about what she has been working on and I was very luck to be able to see early snippets of her video/ animation work, which will be a large aspect of her show: Gulp.
I was so exciting to see how her sculptures - which function like enlargements of something small - return to a miniaturized form. Strangely, it's through reducing the size that we are brought up-close through the lens and offered a magnification of these micro-ecosystems. Through the animation she is able to focus our attention onto the details which she herself is captivated by in the studio; the moments of play, discovery, and exploration. -Amber Imrie-Situnayake
