Venison Magazine finally has it’s own Instagram!!! For the last two year all of us behind the scenes: found and searched for artists through our own instagram accounts. (@amberimrie, @adrimakesart, @zishery) Now, we have one hub @ven.mag , for finding and featuring artists. This long over due move has led us to an exciting new “competition/ application”-…
Touch. It’s such an important sense. Yet too often it’s deemed inappropriate. We’ve conditioned ourselves to only experience visual arts with our eyes, forgetting our body, our spacial awareness and rejecting the urge to explore texture, temperature, and weight. Instead we are left guessing through calculations and assumptions through our eyes. Last month at Kadist,…
Part of establishing an event like art camp is to discuss ideas from all perspectives. So if you’re wondering what grabs our attention when we’re looking through submissions or scouting, you’re in the right place. An artist statement is pretty debatable these days. Vieno James‘s body of work, Glory, opened at Offsite Gallery inside the World Trade Center in Norfolk, VA last week. His work is a mixed media study of history that compels me to dive deeper into those history books, and ask, what kind of history are we creating right now? I was so happy to be able to talk to Vieno…
Jennifer Chen-Su Huang As many of you may know, Venison Magazine was established by an art collective known as Weeknight Rodeo, which was comprised of UC Berkeley graduates which Jennifer was invited to be part of. The collective evolved into Venison Magazine, allowing her to continue contributing to conversations on contemporary art, but this time…
I had found out about Matt Hall’s work, like so many other artists I have found recently, through Instagram. I loved the way he was combining traditional skeletal articulation and conceptual ideas. Pouring over the sculptures and cabinets on his website, I saw little hints of Joseph Cornell, Mark Dion, and a sort of Mellvinian…
